A Comforting Option

Plus: our new favorite sauce, and more.

you cant do that on television splat GIF

Hi friend,

Who knew that, in 2024, we’d be revisiting some of the biggest tabloid fodder of the mid-’90s?

Like the crimes of the Menendez brothers, subjects of a new Netflix documentary as well as a dramatic Ryan Murphy series. They’ve spent more than 30 years in prison, but the resurgence of interest in their case might prompt their resentencing.

Or the personal life of Lisa Marie Presley. In a new memoir, completed by her daughter Riley Keough after her death, she shares unvarnished memories of a singular life. Early pages capture her wild childhood with Elvis, then the book moves on to her introduction to Scientology and her marriage to Michael Jackson before reaching its sad conclusion. Beneath all the salacious details, it’s a story about grief, tragedy, and addiction. It made us feel very thankful for our non-famous lives.

We listened to the audio version of the book while shopping for sweaters this week — a drop in temperature was enough to send us on a serious hunt. The fruits of our labor, plus more recommendations for your week, are below.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

There’s a newfound chill in the air, it’s dark when we wake up in the morning, and people have their Halloween decorations out. That means…it’s sweater season! We are in the mood for cozy, classic styles — cotton knits, as well as thick cashmere and wool — and found 15 to choose from.

TO LISTEN We’re four chapters deep into the audiobook version of Lisa Marie Presley’s posthumous memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown (here on Amazon, and here on Spotify), and it is mind-blowing. The book was finished by Presley’s daughter, Riley Keough, who shares narrating duties with actor Julia Roberts; both are a great listen.

TO STREAM We wanted to see Rachel Bloom’s (of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) on-stage performance of Death, Let Me Do My Show, when she was touring – but now, we can watch it from home thanks to a new Netflix special. The show, set during early Covid, somehow finds humor in a tumultuous, emotional series of events in her life.

TO SNACK These chocolate-covered goji berries are similar to raisinets, but are so much tastier. We keep them in the fridge and like them as an afternoon pick-me-up.

TO WATCH The new indie film Anora is being compared to Pretty Woman, but if Julia Roberts’ character had a filthy mouth and Richard Gere was the son of an intimidating Russian oligarch. It has already garnered critical acclaim, and it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

TO MAKE We’ve been drizzling this tahini sauce on everything from grain bowls to chicken. There’s something really comforting about it, and we love how it’s super-simple and adaptable. We added cayenne for kick, but you can choose other herbs or spices.

The essay on email we didn’t know we needed. • The return of Milli Vanilli. • Please, no more. • “Restorative rocking” sounds great, actually. • Your libido won’t necessarily “fall off a cliff” in middle age. • Samantha Bee discusses her perimenopausal rage blackouts.

How we feel about waking up in darkness.
