A Dramatic Change

Plus: dark denim for fall and more.

Hi friend,

It’s a seismic shift. We know that young people have embraced low-rise jeans, but we are here to say that the new look is low-rise everything. We’re talking slacks, skirts, shorts, etc; if it has a waist, it’s going to be low, and maybe, it’ll also be belted. It was this Tory Burch show that made it abundantly clear (also: Khaite, TWP, Michael Kors). Reality hit like a thunderclap.

[Pause to process.]

You might be saying, who cares? This doesn’t matter. And you’d be right. It absolutely, positively does not matter. We all have real problems. This is just information, context, for the next time you tear through your closet trying on and rejecting every bottom for not feeling or looking quite right anymore. (We’re speaking from experience). Also, if you love high-rises, stick with them! They’ll be back in soon, given the way the fashion wheel turns.

Another big trend this fall is denim, specifically in darker shades of indigo. It’s a crisper, more polished spin on the all-over denim looks that have been popular, and it’s great paired with other fall mainstays like soft grays (as pictured below), chocolate browns, and even lighter washes. Read on for a few of our favorites, plus some recommendations for your week.

Bye,

Your friends at Gloria

Dark-wash denim is perhaps the one trend we’ll fully give into this fall. It’s versatile, easy to wear, and looks good with what we already have in our closets. We were inspired by this look (she’s wearing the Ulla Johnson Delphine jeans) to go out in search of other options.

TO READ The new historical romance Amanda (Bookshop, Amazon), by H.S. Cross, is being compared to Jane Austen and D.H. Lawrence. It’s set in post-WWI England, and tells the complicated love story between two people of different classes. It’s like a little history lesson crossed with some light erotica.

TO LISTEN We stumbled across this recent conversation with makeup artist and cosmetics magnate Bobbi Brown on the podcast Wild Card With Rachel Martin — she’s promoting her new memoir, Still Bobbi (out today) — and it’s such a good one. Maybe it’s because the questions are so interesting, or that Bobbi isn’t afraid to give real answers, or the host’s positive demeanor.

TO WATCH In Wayward (on Netflix Thursday), Toni Collette is the creepy director of a troubled teen institute. The plot was inspired by the experiences of a friend of creator-director Mae Martin, who escaped a similar institution after two years and had “crazy stories.” We’re also seeing positive early reviews for Ethan Hawke’s new crime series The Lowdown, which is out on FX today and will be streaming on Hulu.

TO BAKE If you’d rather give in than fight the pumpkin spice onslaught, these chewy snickerdoodles look really tasty and easy to make (and we bet they also smell amazing while cooking).

A new season calls for a new hair routine that keeps things full-bodied and deeply moisturized. We’ve been turning to RŌZ, the clean, botanical-based line that’s all about keeping hair glossy and hydrated without weighing it down. Their Foundation Shampoo + Conditioner Set gives a perfect base. It uses clean coconut-based surfactants plus ceramides and pea peptides to gently cleanse and restore moisture. Then this serum is a lightweight leave-in that adds shine and protects from frizz. And for lift and volume, the thickening spray gives airy fullness right at the roots. We love that the line feels indulgent but effortless. It’s a seasonal upgrade that actually makes a difference. #partner
