A Fall Favorite

Plus: a sleazy return, and more.

Hi friend,

It feels like many lifetimes ago that Dov Charney, CEO of American Apparel, was terminated after, as Reuters reported, “‘The company discovered voluminous evidence of Mr. Charney’s sexual liaisons with employees and models.’” According to the report, he kept videos of these encounters on a company server. The firing also came after multiple sexual harassment lawsuits.

Dov had built an empire upon being sleazy right out in the open. Perhaps you recall the time he routinely masturbated in front of a journalist and talked of dating his employees?

These sorts of incidents were aired out in a July Netflix documentary, Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel. You can hear it discussed on a recent episode of journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis’s podcast, Infamous.

Ten years later, Dov has opened a retail store for his new clothing company, Los Angeles Apparel, in Soho. It’s the second brick-and-morter location for Los Angeles Apparel, and is described as a 2,000-square-foot “super store.” It looks just like American Apparel, it essentially is American Apparel, just by another name.

Times have changed, or have they? A new generation has fallen for the “indie sleaze” of the past, which is a bummer for those who lived through it the first time around. “I really don’t want to be a buzzkill,” writes Emily Maddick for Glamour UK, but “there’s no getting away from it — it was a sleazy, seedy, grubby, druggy and dangerous time. It was also a horrendous time to be a woman in the public eye.” Not that they want to hear it from us, unfortunately.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

In the fashion world, the start of September kicks off the whirlwind of fashion month, with shows in New York City, London, Milan, and Paris. For editors and influencers, this means putting together a stream of designer looks. But in our day-to-day lives, we’re much more likely to be in a sweatshirt than anything you’d see on a runway. We really cannot get enough of them; here, 11 we are eyeing.

TO STREAM It feels like every new show is some sort of violent crime thriller. So we’re tentatively excited for The Paper, a lighthearted docu-style spinoff of The Office that debuts on Peacock Thursday. It’s set at a local newspaper in Ohio, and will feature one familiar face: Oscar Nuñez, who played accountant Oscar Martínez on the original series.

TO COOK This chicken dish is going in our weeknight rotation. It’s easy, it’s kid-approved, and the pan sauce is amazing. We paired it with rice and veggies.

TO GET This candle is an indulgence, but we’re obsessed with it. It has a scent that feels like fall, but isn’t all pumpkin spice-y (it’s more earthy and grassy). We love it so much that we’re contemplating the hand soap.
