A Fashionable Break
Plus: Valentine's Day browsing, and more.

Hi friend,
Many thanks to Kendrick Lamar and his bell-bottom jeans for shaking us out of our politics-induced news spirals for at least one night. We also have to mention the custom-made Gloria jacket, of course.
The men assigned to liveblog the halftime show struggled to describe his look. Like at the New York Times, which offered this strange take, “A quick recognition of Lamar’s wan jeans which are slim through the legs and then fan out into bootcuts, a silhouette that really can only be called, well, mom jeans.” “Mom jeans?” Come on now.
Not only did Kendrick show us that guys can wear Y2K-era flares (his were by Celine, but Levi’s has a similar style), he and Serena Williams also gave pop-culture fans beef to chew on while intellectual types could – and likely, are – writing dissertations on the imagery.
Speaking of fashionable distractions, New York Fashion Week just wrapped, and according to critic Rachel Seville Tashjian Wise of the Washington Post, the major look for fall is copycatting the Row. She’s calling these brands The Rowdents which…is brutal.
“Even when a designer hasn’t spent time in the Olsen spaceship, blatant nods to the Row are all over the place: in the ladylike bags and the covered-up chic on Khaite’s runway, the freaky hats and mesh shoes at Altuzarra, and the sentimental nods to golden-age couturiers like Fortuny and Jeanne Lanvin at Fforme and Prabal Gurung. Creative directors believe that an interesting outfit means you have a rich inner life. Sometimes that’s true, but with all this copying going on, we’re mostly seeing wearable credit card debt.”
We’re not ones to argue with a critic who, as the kids would say, stands on business, but this Khaite look of a massive coat paired with an eye-shielding hat is appealing when you are a tired 40-something. She could be wearing anything under that. That goes for Altuzarra, too. Look: Some of us want body-enveloping outerwear and long, drapey dresses with sleeves. Particularly during this new age of villainy.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria
The older we get, the less we tolerate discomfort. That’s why we’ve shelved all our other bras for the Honey Love CloudEmbrace wireless bra. It’s designed to support and lift while creating a smooth, seamless appearance thanks to a proprietary CloudfuseTM honeycomb bonding in the wing and soft, memory foam cups. The fit is excellent, it looks great under all our tops, and we can wear it all day without discomfort.

TO STREAM Questlove is busy these days. First he knocks it out of the park with an SNL music retrospective (watch the trailer if you haven’t, it’s incredible) and now his Sly & The Family Stone documentary, SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), is debuting on Hulu Thursday. The music, the history, the fashion, the hair – we can’t wait to watch. Also on Thursday, Prime Video will release acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano’s Broken Rage, which promises to be a unique viewing experience.

TO LISTEN This is less of a podcast interview with Cyndi Lauper than an opportunity for Cyndi Lauper to hold court and tell a bunch of stories from her life. We could listen to her talk all day.
TO DO If you’ve been feeling frozen/impotent at the current state of affairs in our government, here is helpful rundown on calling your reps. Also, if you appreciate the reporting an outlet is doing, you can subscribe to support them. Like Wired, which is around $12 for a year.
TO LISTEN We’ve had indie artist Sharon Van Etten’s excellent new album with her band The Attachment Theory on repeat this week. It’s hard to pin the sound down, but Siouxsie And The Banshees comes to mind.

A detailed timeline of the drama surrounding Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón ahead of the Oscars next month. • Cat ladies under attack yet again. • “On leaving America.” • Can’t stop thinking about this take.

Yes, Sharon, yes.
