Everyone might be talking about Spider-Man, but our friend chats are lighting up about a different film: Wicker. Coming this fall, it’s the story of a middle-aged, single fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who — tired of the way she’s being treated in her small village — asks a basket-weaver (played by Peter Dinklage) to magic her a husband made out of wicker. Alexander Skarsgård and some special effects bring this “world’s sexiest strawman” to life. And surprise, he turns out to be the perfect partner…in every respect. Picture Brothers Grimm, but rated R for full-frontal basket.
If you’re wondering where this modern fable originated, the answer is a 2008 short story titled “The Wicker Husband” by Ursual Wills-Jones, which you can read for free online, though that might spoil the ending. It’s very good, but much less ribald.
