Hi {{first_name|friend}},

It’s medical anarchy. That might sound dramatic, but how else can you describe a society where people are comfortable injecting themselves with gray-market compounds purchased off social media while MDs exhaust themselves trying to convince parents to get their children vaccinated?

The medical establishment’s ongoing lack of research and treatment for/general disinterest in women’s suffering; our newfound comfort with at-home experimentation; the rise of the supplement and beauty industries selling “solutions” for every problem; and a confusing information landscape has led to all sorts of novel trends. Such as women seeing a video on TikTok, a comment on Threads, or a post on Reddit and then going to the drugstore to get Pepcid AC and Allegra for their perimenopausal brain fog and mood swings.

Experts aren’t thrilled. Says a doctor to New Beauty, one of the few outlets that’s covered this topic, “When people take sedating antihistamines and feel calmer or sleepy, it can be easy to interpret that as an anti-anxiety effect. In reality, what’s happening is usually sedation and cognitive slowing rather than treatment of anxiety or mood disorders.” Trying to self-medicate with OTC products could also be keeping you from a real diagnosis and care. Above all else: Be careful trusting anonymous strangers on the internet!

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

The Other Bennet Sister, which is out on BritBox tomorrow and is based upon the bestselling book by Janice Hadlow, might just fit the bill. Elsewhere, there is the spy thriller Legends (on Netflix Thursday), which was inspired by real events.
