A Little Razzle-Dazzle

Plus: pants! And more.

GIF by The Academy Awards

Hi friend,

Looking for a ray of light this week? What about a little razzle-dazzle? We suggest the new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which pays warm tribute to the living legend, covering the turbulent time in her life in the 1970s after the death of her mother, Judy Garland. It opened in theaters this week in New York, to be followed by wider release.

“That this child survived Hollywood is remarkable,” says the New York Times in a review. “That she became Liza Minnelli is a damn miracle.”

Another upcoming documentary, about another iconoclastic performer, promises a more emotionally complex viewing experience. Pee-wee as Himself, which was screened at Sundance last week (it will stream on HBO Max this spring), is a portrait of the quirky and complicated Paul Reubens, who created a fictional world beloved by both adults and children. We remember his show as a fever dream – colorful and wacky – as much as we remember the scandal that befell him afterward. (Here’s a deep dive on that.)

In search of additional distractions, this week we went shopping for pants. The results are below, plus a new recipe we’re loving, and more.

Bye,

TO LISTEN Tunde Adebimpe, of TV on the Radio, has opened pre-orders on his upcoming debut solo album, Thee Black Boltz. You can listen to two of the tracks – which have the same sort of driving beat and Brooklyn house-party vibe that made the band so popular in the aughts – here.

TO COOK This easy, fast, and delicious weeknight meal of sausage and brussel sprouts is perked up with quick-pickled red onions. It can be served over any grain you have on hand and was so good, we added the leftovers to our morning eggs.
