A Short Alternative
Plus:

Hi friend,
Tired? Well sack up lady, it’s time to strap on a weighted vest and go for a power walk. That’s the message coming from many mid-life wellness influencers who are selling weighted vests as a solution for bone-density issues.
But according to the New York Times, there’s not a ton of evidence that weighted vests are the best solution for bone density. There have not been many studies, the ones that do exist were small (“many had fewer than 20 participants”), and results were mixed.
“Notably, while social media influencers often recommend walking in a weighted vest for bone health, few studies have looked specifically at this use,” they write. “One small study that did found no difference in the bone health of participants who wore vests compared with those who didn’t.”
Weighted vests can make a workout more physically challenging. But walking is amazing because it’s a low-impact activity. A weighted vest changes that, obviously. You could just enjoy walking for what it is, and then, separately, do weight-bearing exercises for bone health.
But, to each his own. Have you tried a weighted vest? And if so, what did you think?

TO READ The title of Maris Kreizman’s new book of essays, I Want to Burn This Place Down (Bookshop, Amazon), conveys a certain screw all of this tone that we think a lot of people will sympathize with. In it, she charts her evolution from hard-working millennial who once believed in meritocracy – “that if she just worked hard and played by the rules, she was guaranteed a safe and comfortable life” – to a new, more critical outlook. Crucially, she’s able to maintain a sense of humor throughout. You can read an excerpt here.
TO WATCH The new PBS documentary Caregiving is very good. It was produced by Bradley Cooper, who talks about taking care of his own dad, and is narrated by Uzo Aduba.
TO LISTEN This song was our introduction to Kathleen Edwards’s music and after one listen, we were hooked. It’s a single off her upcoming album Billionaire, which is out August 22.
TO GAWK A gossipy new podcast dives into what it was like working during the heyday of Condé Nast, collecting anecdotes from people like Gourmet's Ruth Reichl, Allure's Linda Wells, and Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter. It’s amazing how traumatized they all seem, but having experienced much of what is discussed, particularly the stress of Anna Wintour looking you up and down on the elevator, we get it.
TO DRINK This seltzer is delicious. It’s kind of like a more sophisticated Spindrift, and would be great as a mixer.
