Hi {{first_name|friend}},
We are careening towards a major milestone: 250 years of America, aka the Semiquincentennial (try pronouncing it). In just a few weeks, our great nation will be honored with a UFC fight on the South Lawn of the White House. “Weigh-ins will be held at the Lincoln Memorial,” while main-event competitors will emerge from the Oval Office.
How far we’ve come. As Time reminds us, “MMA was once considered so savage that at the turn of the century, unlike pornography and other controversial fare, it wasn’t even carried on pay-per-view in many places. Now, the UFC is so mainstream that CBS, a network that on Saturday nights once aired Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, is showing Swanson club Landwehr’s cranium with his right hand, knocking him out in the first round.”
Tacky and feeling great. That describes both a segment of the population that loves to see men punch each other in the head, and — per CNN’s senior style reporter — the new US luxury shopper. It’s the aesthetic of a country that’s dropped all pretension of civility.
Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

TO WATCH Can the mid-life crisis hit The Four Seasons replicate the success of its first season? It’s back this Thursday for a second round featuring a new challenge for the set of old friends: vacationing with a baby.
TO SHOP It’s the last day of Rothy’s 25% off sale. We’re especially into the new fisherman sandals for summer and their classic washable clogs (we’re on our second pair). They’re comfortable, easy to clean, and travel-friendly. Shop the sale here. #partner
TO MAKE The beauty of an Alison Roman recipe is how she edits down her ingredient lists. Like this caramelized beans with tomato and cabbage dish (from her most-recent book), which was a hit over the rainy Memorial Day weekend. You only need a few things to make it, and it turned out really delicious. We had it on sourdough toast one day, and tossed it with pasta the next.
TO LISTEN Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo just uploaded a playlist of “randum cuverz” to his YouTube channel, starting off with a snippet of Radiohead’s “Creep,” and segueing into a strummy version of Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” There are also short takes on hits from the likes of Green Day, Whitney Houston, and Metallica. Listen before he thinks better of it and deletes this!

Have you checked out Madewell lately? It’s been really good. They have the kind of clothes we end up wearing all the time; classics, but with fun details.
Right now, we’re especially into this sand-friendly beach tote, a perfect summer top that you can actually wear a bra with, comfy jeans, and a cute hat that might actually stay on in the wind.
The dresses are fantastic, too, particularly this one and this one. They’re easy-wearing, throw-on staples for all sorts of summer occasions. Shop it all here. #partner
