Good Health News?
Plus: summer skirts, a new show, and more.

Hi friend,
A lot of very wealthy people are interested in health and longevity right now. And there are all sorts of new, experimental technologies and treatments on the market that may or may not be beneficial. At a recent biohacking conference in Austin, for example, a Wired reporter tried hyperbaric oxygen chambers, IV drips, and electromagnetic infrared beds. He also listened to talk about microdosing snake venom.
If there was a booth or a presenter focused on mid-life women’s health, he didn’t cover it. Maybe the biohackers in Austin are less concerned with us as a demographic?
Someone’s paying attention, though. Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist, founder of Scripps Translational Science Institute, and the author of the recent book Super Agers, wrote this week that there’s new evidence that links “estrogen intake to slower aging of the immune system” as well as our liver and arteries. Topol dedicated an issue of his newsletter to the hormone, with a deep dive into new research as well as an overview of past controversies regarding hormone therapy.
It’s all pretty dense, but as he summarizes, this new data “add to prior reports of estrogen’s effect on preserving bone health, reducing heart disease, preserving cognitive function, reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes.”
Topol is one of the more sober voices of the longevity movement; his advice is grounded in simple, evidenced-based lifestyle changes, like better sleep, physical movement (walking, resistance training), and eating a Mediterranean diet. This is less exciting than the idea of “injecting viper, cobra, and rattlesnake venoms” directly into your bloodstream, but it works.
Moving on from tried-and-true health advice to a tried-and-true summer wardrobe staple — the skirt. Keep scrolling for our finds, plus a few recommendations for your week.
Bye,
Your friends at Gloria
