How to Keep Comfy

Plus: a must-watch documentary and more.

Hi friend,

Yes, the election is happening as we send this out. Let’s all distract ourselves with something else, shall we?

Like the new Martha Stewart documentary, Martha. “She is just a wild force,” texted a friend last week, mid-watch. “One of the most interesting people alive.”

Not everyone came away with the same impression, to put it lightly. As Bilge Ebiri writes in a review of the film for Vulture, Martha appears “combative, egomaniacal, impatient, uncaring, and at times delusional.” Other reviews describe her as “prickly,” “a tough boss,” “an unprintable word for a strong woman,” “a mean perfectionist control freak,” “a hardass,” and “vicious when crossed.”

“Those are all the things that used to make people hate Martha Stewart,” writes Constance Grady for Vox. “In Martha, they become the thing that makes her the most likable. They are human flaws, messy and endearing, in a woman who has worked for decades to try to make herself appear perfect.”

Appearing in the margins of her life are men who have shaped current events dramatically, like James Comey, who made an example of her when he sent her to prison for insider trading. Or Tony Hinchcliffe, who before his recent remarks on Puerto Rico worked with Martha on her Justin Bieber roast jokes. That event was pivotal for her; it’s where she met Snoop Dogg, after all.

Yes, she’s cold. The footage of her castigating a staffer for using the “wrong” knife to cut an orange made it clear she’s a nightmare to work for. But she is certainly intriguing and driven, and we’re impressed with how she shook off the shame of her jail time. As director R.J. Cutler said of the documentary, “it’s the story of an incredibly interesting human being who is complicated and visionary and brilliant.”

We highly recommend it! For more things to watch and listen to, plus a selection of comfy pants for weekends and workdays, scroll on. We’ll see you here Friday.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

TO WATCH In Music by John Williams (streaming now on Disney+), the genius who scored Star Wars, ET, Jurassic Park, and more iconic films is getting the documentary treatment. There is also Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (in theaters), the tear-inducing story of the actor’s rise and activism, told through archival footage and interviews with his children.

TO LISTEN There’s been so much news about Sean Combs (aka Diddy, aka Puff Daddy) that it can be hard to keep up. This podcast episode from The Slow Newscast is a good overview, though it comes with all the trigger warnings.

Enjoyed this rave review of Conclave. • A truly wild coworker story. • Reading this conversation felt like hanging out with Stevie Nicks for an afternoon. • Political incompatibility is ruining dating. • Myth-busting the supplement wellness people are hyping for energy and aging.
