In Pursuit of Cozy
Plus: Hollywood gossip, a tasty soup, and more.

Hi friend,
When building an entertainment company, why would you choose to hire a bunch of men who have been fired or ostracized from the industry for a multitude of reasons, including sexual harassment? According to a juicy story from The Hollywood Reporter about Paramount’s new chief David Ellison, Ellison sees this as good business. They describe a workplace environment where “blunt feedback is the norm, canceled talent is welcome (cheaper on the dollar, and yearning to prove themselves) and no one is walking on eggshells.”
Such cancelled talent includes director Brett Ratner, “who was banished from Hollywood in 2017 after a Los Angeles Times report in which six women accused him of sexual misconduct.” He will be resurrecting the Rush Hour franchise, upon personal request from President Trump. (Ratner, according to reports, is living at Mar-a-Lago while he works on his Melania Trump documentary.)
Another is former Pixar guru John Lasseter, who resigned from Disney after allegations of inappropriate behavior went public. This story goes into specifics. Ellison is also “willing to empower once-canceled male execs” as well as talent like actor Johnny Depp, who will mark his big-screen comeback as Ebenezer Scrooge in a Paramount version of the holiday classic A Christmas Carol.
But this Hollywood Reporter expose has been completely eclipsed by news of Ellison’s hostile bid (backed by three Middle East sovereign-wealth funds and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner) for Warner Bros. Discovery, an attempt to take control of CNN as well as undercut a deal offered by Netflix…which the entirety of Hollywood was up in arms about, seeing it as the final nail in the coffin of the movie theater-going experience. As The Daily points out, it’s kind of hard to know who to root for here.
Bye,
Your friends at Gloria
