Hi {{first_name|friend}},

This weekend, electronic music artist/former Elon Musk flame Grimes, née Claire Boucher, discovered menopause. “Discovered” isn’t exactly correct; rather, it was explained to her “by a friend.”

“Every woman on earth should be demanding solutions for menopause - your heart, your bones, your connective tissue, beauty, mental health, intellect - And no one tells u about this. Whoever invests in this now will be rich. Please God spare the millennials,” she wrote, urgently.

And then, this: “feel like the hot new thing is gna be menopause. How is this NOT A THING???? I know some ppl going thru menopause right now - ITS WORSE THAN PREGNANCY AND NONE OF US CAN AVOID IT! 50% of humans. You couldn’t ask for a bigger market. Somebody solve this before I get osteoporosis.”

If we were Grimes’s friend who just informed her about the existence of menopause, we’d also tell her that many people are talking about this, that this dialog has in fact spawned an entire influencer economy that she’s apparently too young to be targeted by yet.

Why should I care if a 38 year old — who, self-admittedly, may be suffering from AI psychosis — has suddenly discovered a biological process that virtually every woman who lives long enough will experience?, you might be asking right now.

Fair question. At the very least, her proximity to the monied tech scene offers a glimpse of how those types might decide to throw their resources at perimenopause. Her late-night Tweetstorm prompted plenty of response, some equally vacuous, others deludedly optimistic. In particular, there was a lot of discussion about ovarian tissue banking or cryopreservation (which has been used for young cancer or sickle cell patients to try to preserve their fertility), including an offer for her to join in on a group trip to a New York City clinic.

Is all attention on this topic good attention? Will a spate of passionate posting lead to someone “solving” this in the next few years? We’ll stay tuned.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

TO WATCH Ooh, a starchy new British drama. A Woman of Substance (out on BritBox tomorrow) is the stunningly shot, slightly soapy tale of a woman who moves from household maid to business mogul. It’s already a huge hit in the UK.

TO MAKE This is maybe the perfect lunch recipe (we added soba noodles). Store the slaw separately from the dressing, and a big batch will last you a few days.

TO LISTEN case/lang/veirs, the female supergroup of Neko Case, k.d. Lang, and Laura Veirs, has a new album coming out this fall. Lang lends her pitch-perfect voice to the first single.

“I spent a week as my friend’s facelift nurse. Here’s what no one tells you.” • 30 years after Beck’s Odelay, looking back at what turned out to be one of the best albums of the ‘90s. • The millennial brand aesthetic is being replaced by…gloop. • An interesting assortment of ideas about the homes of the future. • Whatever gets the kids into Mazzy Star. • Well, this is damning.
