Like Going Back In Time
Plus: beachy clothes and more.

Hi friend,
Some people feel like their life peaked in the ‘90s. And now, there’s a vacation just for those people. It’s The ‘90s Cruise, which set sail for its maiden voyage in January featuring musical acts like Gin Blossoms, Digital Underground, C+C Music Factory, and Blues Traveler.
Our guide to this “deliciously strange” five-day bacchanal is former MTV VJ Dave Holmes, who covered it for Esquire. His anecdotes are delightful (there’s a bit about the way Lisa Loeb eats burgers and pizza that we can’t stop thinking about). But the pleasure of Sophie B. Hawkins belting out “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” can only paper over the bitter stuff of reality for a few moments. And although getting on a ship and sailing away from our problems and into the past sounds appealing, Holmes does include this note of caution. Feel free to apply it to all nostalgia bait.
“Memory is an unreliable thing. Memory infused with a pining for lost youth or a life with fewer cares or a past that never really existed even more so. We need to be careful with this stuff.”

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

TO STREAM The new Netflix tennis docuseries Carlos Alcaraz: My Way (out tomorrow) is a profile of a wildly successful young athlete, but it’s also about the sacrifices it takes to achieve a certain level of greatness in sports. The next day brings Prime Video’s Étoile, which dives into the ballet world. Though it’s a fictional dramedy, it does feature talented real-life dancers.
TO MAKE This one-pot meatballs with greens recipe was surprisingly easy, light, and fresh. You can swap out the greens — read the comments for a few tweaks that make the dish excellent — and the extras are good next day, or saved in the freezer.
TO READ In the tales told of Timothy Leary, aka the pied piper of LSD, his wife Rosemary Woodruff Leary is mostly a footnote. Not so in the fascinating new book The Acid Queen (here on Bookshop, here on Amazon), which tells Rosemary’s story. It includes police raids, working with Weather Underground to break Timothy out of jail, and living outside the US for more than 20 years as a fugitive from the law.

What does this mean for treating brain diseases?” • Related: This feels like a very balanced take on the efforts to extend longevity. • Women are flocking to gyms for weight training, transforming gyms in the process. • A stunning piece on parenting and an impressive set of stories about the Vietnam War.
