Old-School Gossip
Plus: a perky spring shade, and more.

Hi friend,
If you’re looking to swap out present-day concerns for decades-old drama, mark your calendars. Next Monday brings the debut of the dishy new documentary Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything on Hulu.
The film is already making headlines for what it reveals, such as: Walters’ affair with a married senator (“she liked men” and “she liked the possibility of sex”); her rivalry with Diane Sawyer; and how she partially influenced Oprah’s decision to not have children. This quote from Oprah is incredible: “I remember her telling me once that ‘there’s nothing more fulfilling than having children, and you should really think about it.’ And I was like, ‘OK, but I’m looking at you. So, no.’”
While Walters inhabited the highbrow celebrity media ecosystem, writer Jeff Wise clung to its lowest rungs. The former tabloid stringer just released a book about his time covering Britney Spears titled Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly. Instead of hosting prime-time TV interviews, he hung out at clubs hoping for celeb sightings, chasing after people in cars, and — in one memorable anecdote — trespassed on Brad Pitt’s property. (He was caught by security guards and dragged in front of Pitt, who just shook his head at him.) It’s as much about Spears as it is about the seedy work of reporting out tabloid stories — another era that’s coming to a close.
We have more distractions for you below, including a surprising color trend and two soapy new shows.
Bye,
Your friend at Gloria

TO STREAM The suspenseful new series We Were Liars (on Prime Video tomorrow), adapted from the wildly popular YA novel of the same name, untangles the mystery of what happened to a wealthy teen one summer on her family’s island. In more YA fare, the soapy new show The Waterfront (out Thursday on Netflix from the creator of Dawson’s Creek) is about the lengths one family will go to to save their North Carolina fishing business.

TO READ The gonzo new book Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly (Bookshop, Amazon) is the result of a tabloid reporter diving deep down a rabbit hole. It’s told by Jeff Weiss, one of the pests who’d covered Spears during her heyday, and you can read an excerpt of it here.
TO COOK We picked up this unassuming Paul Prudhomme seasoning blend on a recent trip, and were shocked at how tasty and versatile it is. It’s perfect for seafood, but also great on ground turkey or chicken.

An apartment tour that’s much more that an apartment tour. • E. Jean Carroll is truly one of a kind. • “The job market is brutal for women executives.” • One couple tries to perk up their sex life…with MDMA. • Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang is now hosting phone-free parties?
