The Wildest Work Gossip
Plus: cute sneakers and more.

Hi friend,
We’ve been thinking a lot about how on Saturday, aka International Women’s Day, a bunch of powerful men welcomed accused sex traffickers Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan as guests of honor at a UFC fight in Las Vegas. Who else was in attendance? Well, there was new FBI director Kash Patel sitting next to Mel Gibson; Dana White (now on the board of Meta) along with Mark “Masculine Energy” Zuckerberg and his wife; and podcasters Joe Rogan and Theo Von.
They all seemed to be having a great time. But for Zuckerberg, there were clouds on the horizon. Today brings the release of an explosive new book about his company, Meta, titled Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism. The book is by Sarah Wynn-Williams, who served as Meta’s director of global policy under Zuckerberg, Joel Kaplan, and Sheryl Sandberg. We just started listening to it, and it’s both funny and shocking. We can only describe the experience as combo of watching Silicon Valley and eavesdropping on the wildest sort of work gossip.
Take the New York Times review, which includes a quote from Zuckerberg saying Andrew Jackson was the greatest American president as well as a salacious story featuring Sheryl Sandberg and lingerie.
Careless People was essentially kept secret by its publisher, and for good reason; Meta’s already tried to block its release and yesterday put out a prebuttal.
This anecdote from the book, via NBC, was unaddressed:
“In 2016, as part of an email chain about Wynn-Williams’ U.S. citizenship test, Kaplan asked her whether the test included the phrase ‘dirty sanchez,’ a sexual slang phrase and racial slur, according to the book and a copy of the email seen by NBC News. Wynn-Williams also described Kaplan’s asking her after childbirth ‘where are you bleeding from?’ and telling her at a company event that she looked ‘sultry.’”
Gross! If this all is a little much for your Tuesday, scroll on for some lighter fare, including cute sneakers, a silly show, and more.
Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

We love how popular flats are these days (loafers, ballet flats, you name it), but when push comes to shove we are wearing sneakers. Particularly on the weekends, or any day when we know we’ll be walking a lot. And there are so many good ones out right now. Our favorites, from classics to newer brands, are below.
Great shape, great color. Autry Windspin Calf Hair Sneakers, $250.
Like Prada and Repetto, but for less. Ralph Lauren The Suede Pony Ballerina Sneaker, $198.
Slightly nubby suede elevates this cute retro style. Nike Cortez Vintage Suede Shoes, $100.
The red version of these sneakers sold out fast, and we expect this green shade will as well. Cos Minimal Suede Sneakers, $135.
We’ve never described a sneaker as delicate before, but this low-profile pair is. Zara Soft Athletic Sneakers, $49.90.
A pretty alternative to the Adidas Gazelle. Coolway Kizuna Sneakers, $100.
Love the detail on this blue pair. Ba&sh Low-Top Trainers, $162.
Makes us excited for summertime. Vans Premium Authentic Duck Canvas Shoe, $85.
A sporty style in a cool color combo. Asics UB9-S Gel-Kayano 20 Lace-Up Sneakers, $183.12. (This colorway is good too.)
Clean, minimal, and goes with everything. Uniqlo Suede Combination Sneakers, $59.90.
Expensive, but absolutely adorable. Ghōud Rush Starlight, $295.
A classic. Keds Champion Gender Neutral Canvas Lace Up, $35.
A very special style from a cool, female-founded indie brand. The Office of Angela Scott The Remi Sneaker, $495.

TO READ If you read Torrey Peter’s debut novel, Detransition, Baby, you’ll understand why we’re excited for her newest book. Stag Dance, which is out today (here on Bookshop, here on Amazon), tackles some of the same topic matter as her first (gender identity, sexuality, and being trans), but the format and the genre is much more risk-taking and experimental.

TO STREAM Speaking of experimental: Comedian John Mulaney’s off-the-wall live-TV talk show for Netflix got picked up and is now a real series. Here’s what he said about Everybody's Live With John Mulaney (on tomorrow at 10pm ET): “We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news. We will always be reckless. Netflix will always provide us with data that we will ignore.” We’re also curious about HBO’s comedy-horror movie The Parenting, which has a great cast.

“How giant white houses took over America.” • The upside of a married-life sex sabbatical. • When your mother is a hoarder. • White Lotus’s triggering friendship triangle. There will be a second season of With Love, Meghan.
