This Sounds Familiar

Plus: cute tees and more.

Hi friend,

You could argue that Coachella, in its current crowded format, is for the young. Particularly this past weekend, with its combo of excessive heat and major traffic jams. But if that’s the case, why were so many of its major acts Gen X and Millennial mainstays? We’re talking about Green Day, Weezer, The Prodigy, T-Pain, The Go-Go’s, Jimmy Eat World, the Misfits, and Missy Elliott, whose set was just as futuristic and fun as you’d expect.

No one is doing it like this. No one! The stagecraft, the vision, the sets, the costumes, the vibes…

Her performance comes on the heels of her first-ever headlining world tour, kicked off last year at the age of 53. We agree with the LA Times writer who wrote, “In a time when social media is a vicious panopticon and artists live in mortal fear of a flop era, she showed how exhilarating it is to simply do exactly what you want, unbowed by anyone’s expectation of you.”

It’s tempting to draw a larger conclusion here. Like we’re experiencing some sort of creative stagnation, or the death of music monoculture means it's harder to break through in a big way, like Missy did in the late ‘90s. But maybe we’re overthinking things. Perhaps it’s just about cold, hard cash, and a lineup that attracts people who can afford to go.

After all, more than half of attendees this year financed their tickets through Coachella’s buy now, pay later payment plan (which was “especially popular” with younger attendees).

As festival season returns, so does warmer weather. Some ideas for summer outfits are below, plus a few more recommendations for your week.

Bye,
Your friends at Gloria

We wear our T-shirts into the ground, which is why every year around this time we start looking for one or two fresh styles. There are a lot of variables to consider, including print, fit, and weight. We went looking for everything from classic stripes and neutrals to colorful prints; here, our favorites.

We used to dream about having an executive assistant to take care of the personal tasks that clutter up our brains and eat at our free time. Then we found Duckbill — and honestly, it’s been a game changer.

Duckbill handles everything from quick errands (like finding a great Easter recipe) to time-consuming research (like tracking down the right specialist for a specific health concern). It can also manage ongoing tasks, like scheduling doctor appointments, paying bills, and renewing licenses — without us lifting a finger.

Right now, it’s helping us find a bakery for a very specific birthday cake and making progress on the family photo albums we’ve wanted to create for years. No task is too small or too complex.

If your to-do list is never-ending, Duckbill can help you finally get ahead — without the stress. Gloria readers can try it for themselves: use code GLORIA50 at checkout for 50 percent off your first two months. It’s the kind of help you didn’t realize you needed… until everything suddenly feels a whole lot easier. #partner

TO STREAM A classic whodunit, from the master of the genre. In Agatha Christie’s Toward Zero (streaming on BritBox), a murder occurs and a cast of characters with various motives and secrets – gathered together at a gorgeous estate in the English countryside – are all suspect.

TO GET Old Navy’s finally going to be the brand that gets us to pull the trigger on the jelly sandal trend, isn’t it? These are extremely cute and are the right price ($20). FYI, the reviews mention that they run a bit large.

TO LISTEN Listen to the true stories from the legendary ladies who were there in KCRW’s podcast Lost Notes: Groupies. The most recent season focuses on the extremely iconic “women of the Sunset Strip,” and kicks off in 1973.

How to figure out when it’s time to move a parent to a senior residence. • A heartwarming profile of a baking entrepreneur. • Takeaways from one woman’s immersion in the world of Quince. • “So you want to be a dissident.”
